Kenneth Browning Handley Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: Continuing students with demonstrated good character, intellectual ability, breadth of interest, and seriousness of purpose. Students must be a junior or senior at the time the scholarship is used. The Kenneth Browning Handley Scholarship honors the memory of Kenneth B. Handley who, at the time of his death in December 1982, was a student at the University of Utah majoring in chemistry and mathematics. Ken was an outstanding student and had a great curiosity about the world and broad interests in literature, philosophy and music. He was an accomplished clarinetist. He was mature, respectful, and compassionate in his dealings with others. He was a loyal friend and exemplary older brother. Two scholarships for $2,000 each are available. The funds will be deposited in the student’s account in the University of Utah’s Tuition Office and can be used for educational expenses such as tuition and fees.

Martin H. Hiatt Endowed Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: Continuing Honors students. A donation from the estate of Martin H. Hiatt established an endowed scholarship fund at the University of Utah. In accordance with his wishes, a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is awarded to a student enrolled in the Honors College. The funds will be deposited in the student’s account in the University of Utah’s Tuition Office and can be used for educational expenses such as tuition and fees.

The Barbara Lindsay Honors Essay Award | Eligibility Requirements: Scholarship applicants must submit a thoughtful essay on the way in which their exposure to the history of ideas in the Honors Intellectual Traditions courses has influenced their view of the world and their course of study. Essays must be typed and double-spaced and are not to exceed 2,000 words in length. This $1,000 scholarship was named in honor of Dr. Barbara Lindsay who was a Classics professor and taught Honors courses for nearly 20 years. The funds will be deposited in the student’s account in the University of Utah’s Tuition Office and can be used for educational expenses such as tuition and fees.

C. Charles Hetzel III Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: The recipient must be a U.S. citizen and a non-resident student admitted to or enrolled in the Honors College at the University of Utah. This scholarship fund provides educational assistance to a deserving Honors student who demonstrates high academic achievement. Up to $10,000 may be awarded. The award will be distributed over a period of two semesters toward tuition cost. Half of the scholarship funds will be deposited in the student’s tuition account at the beginning of the first semester, and the other half will be deposited in the student’s tuition account for use in the second semester.

James B. & Betty Debenham Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: Continuing Honors students A generous gift from the trust of Betty Debenham established this scholarship fund for Honors students. The donation honors James B. Debenham. This year the Honors College will award three $1,000 scholarships. The funds will be deposited in the student’s account in the University of Utah’s Tuition Office and can be used for educational expenses such as tuition and fees.

James N. Kimball Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: All Honors students, except graduating seniors, who exhibit academic excellence and a commitment to the community. Beloved Honors Professor James N. Kimball was a businessman, historian, armchair politician, author, and story teller. In his memory, a $500 scholarship is awarded each year to an Honors student. The funds will be deposited in the student’s account in the University of Utah’s Tuition Office and can be used for educational expenses such as tuition and fees.

The Honors Baccalaureate Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: Seniors who will complete their Senior Honors Thesis/Project during the current academic year (i.e. Fall 2008, Spring 2009, or Summer 2009) and will start a graduate program in Fall of 2009. This scholarship is a stipend for the amount of $4,000. It is awarded each year to outstanding recipients of the Honors Bachelor’s Degree for the purpose of pursuing graduate studies at a university of the student’s choice. The funds will be transferred to the tuition office of the graduate program that the student selects.

The Sweet Candy Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: Honors students who are juniors or seniors and who have at least one more year before graduation. The Sweet Candy Company of Salt Lake City has established an endowment fund to provide scholarships in the amount of $2,000 for outstanding Honors students. The funds will be deposited in the student’s account in the University of Utah’s Tuition Office and can be used for educational expenses such as tuition and fees.

Tuition Waiver Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: * Applicants must be Utah residents * The waiver covers tuition but no fees for fall and spring semester * The tuition waiver cannot be used with another tuition waiver * Students must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours and maximum of 18 credit hours * Students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better. These scholarships pay full tuition for one academic year (two semesters) at the University of Utah. The Financial Aid and Scholarship Office will credit the scholarship recipient’s account in the Tuition Office, 165 Student Services Building.

Transfer Student Scholarship | Eligibility Requirements: Transfer students who have completed at least thirty (30) hours of post high school credits are eligible to apply for the $5,000 Honors College Transfer Student Scholarship. Applicants transferring from another college or university are expected to have previously graduated from an accredited high school. To apply for the scholarship, fill out the Honors College application and select Transfer Student Scholarship on the form.

Alberta Henry Education Foundation Scholarship | The Alberta Henry Education Foundation Scholarship honors the life and work of the late Mrs. Alberta Henry. In 1965, she founded the Foundation in order to provide greater access to higher education for economically disadvantaged students who possess academic potential. The recipient must be a full-time student (enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours) and a resident of the State of Utah. This scholarship provides financial assistance to a deserving Honors student who demonstrates both academic achievement and financial need. Applicants must provide a Federal Student Aid Report (SAR) to be eligible. The $1,000 award will be distributed over a period of two semesters toward tuition cost. Half of the scholarship funds will be deposited in the student’s tuition account at the beginning of the first semester, and the other half will be deposited in the student’s tuition account for use in the second semester.

Duane Harris Butcher Endowed Scholarship | A scholarship fund established in 2002 by Bethann Butcher Martin in the name of Duane Harris Butcher for students in the Honors College who are descendants of the Utah Pioneers who emigrated from 1847-1897. Applicants will demonstrate appreciation for heritage and community through a one page essay and demonstrate talent or aptitude in a chosen field.
