Thesis format

An honors thesis for the Atmospheric Sciences BS should be written in the format that is mutually agreed upon by the student and the faculty mentor.

Some examples include:

  • Software program + developer’s statement
  • Article-based theses
  • Traditional long-format theses

The research reported in the thesis should be conducted over a period of at least one semester. While conducting their research, students are encouraged to enroll in ATMOS 5810 (Experiential Learning II) but are not required to.  Multiple enrollments over multiple semesters are possible.

Students should register for their Faculty Mentor’s section of ATMOS 5810: Experiential Learning II.

Who is eligible to be a faculty thesis mentor?

Tenure-line or career-line faculty at the University of Utah who are working on atmospheric science-related research projects can mentor students.  All research mentors must be approved by the DHL.

Are collaborative theses permitted?

A collaborative thesis is one where an Honors student works with one or more collaborators on the thesis.

Collaborative work as part of Honors theses is allowed.  The relative contributions from all participants (including mentor if relevant) should be provided. As part of the Honors thesis submission, each student's thesis should include a reflection statement as well as the accompanying text or software program.

How does the Honors Thesis relate to other aspects for the major?

Coursework in the Department

ATMOS5800 - Experiential Learning I (1 cr)

Students are guided through independent and group study to prepare an experiential learning experience, e.g., a research project, internship, or outreach activity. Students propose a customized experience relevant to their own interests that will be pursued during a subsequent semester. The course will also help students develop their skills in oral and written scientific communication.

ATMOS5810 - Experiential Learn. II (1 - 12 cr)

A learning opportunity (e.g., a research project, internship, or outreach activity) that is customized by the student to be relevant to their specific interests.

Major-specific Thesis Proposal Process

The Honors College requires Thesis Registration by the end of the third year. If your major has a separate additional Thesis Proposal Process, it is detailed here.
