Gates Cambridge Scholarship:

Funding for postgraduate study in any field (exceptions apply) at the University of Cambridge

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-cost awards that provide tuition fees and a stipend for graduate study and research at the University of Cambridge. The scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to citizens of any country outside of the United Kingdom on the basis of the applicant’s academic excellence, a good fit between the scholar and the university, evidence of leadership potential, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

Eligibility:

  • A citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • Applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:
    • PhD
    • MSc/MLitt
    • One-year postgraduate course not including any of the following:
      • Any undergraduate degree
      • Master’s of Business (MBA)
      • Master’s of Finance (MFin)
      • PGCE
      • MBBChir Clinical Studies
      • MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
      • Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
      • Part-time degrees
      • Non-degree courses
    • Hold a bachelor’s degree by start of the award

Awards:

  • ~80 per year
    • ~25 coming from U.S. students and ~55 from international students
    • 2/3 of the awards are offered to PhD students

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated academic excellence (i.e., transcripts, references, experience and potential to succeed on the chosen course)
  • Reasons for choice of course (i.e., make a strong case for a particular degree, academic background and skills to complete the course, make a case for how completing the proposed course will facilitate career plans)
    • PhD and research master’s degree applicants will need to contact a potential supervisor
  • A commitment to improving the lives of others
  • A capacity for leadership

Application Material:

  • Application for admission and funding via the University’s Graduate Application Portal
  • Personal Statement
  • Research proposal for PhD applicants
  • 3 references (2 academic references for admission and 1 Gates Cambridge reference to speak to the applicants’ fit with the scholarship)

 

Deadlines:

Round 1 Deadline: For U.S. citizen who normally reside in the United States

University deadline: Early September

External deadline: October 14, 2020

Round 2 Deadline: All other eligible applicants

University deadline: Early September

External deadline: Dependent on course – either December 3, 2020 or December 7, 2020

 

Timeline:

Early September: University deadline

October 14, 2020: National deadline for U.S. citizens

Mid-December: Notification of U.S. finalists

January 22 & 23, 2021: Interviews for U.S. finalists

Early February: Notification of selection for U.S. finalists

Length of Program: Dependent on program
