Thesis format
By default, Honors theses will be formatted in the style of a research paper in the appropriate subfield of linguistics. Other formats must be approved by the faculty mentor and the Departmental Honors Liaison.
Who is eligible to be a faculty thesis mentor?
Both career- and tenure-line faculty are eligible to mentor theses. Faculty in other departments are also eligible mentors with the approval of the Departmental Honors Liaison. If a faculty mentor leaves the university before the thesis is complete, then one of the following procedures will be adopted, in order of preference. 1. The departing mentor will continue to mentor the student. 2. The student will find another mentor to help complete the thesis. 3. The student will find a new mentor and change thesis topics.
Are collaborative theses permitted?
A collaborative thesis is one where an Honors student works with one or more collaborators on the thesis.
Collaborative theses are permitted when circumstances warrant them. Such theses must be approved by the faculty mentor(s) and the Departmental Honors Liaison.
Are joint theses permitted?
A joint thesis is a single thesis that satisfies the requirements of multiple majors.
Joint theses are permitted.
How does the Honors Thesis relate to other aspects for the major?
There is no requirement that Honors theses be wholly distinct from other scholarly work that a student pursues (Capstone projects, independent study research, term papers, etc.); in fact, these other avenues for research may be good inspiration or support for an Honors thesis. No specific coursework in support of an Honors thesis is required, though students are encouraged to make use of independent studies and LING 4999 (Honors Thesis/Project).
