Thesis format

Students have the option to complete a traditional long-format thesis or can create an article-based thesis. The most commonly completed option will be the long-format. If a long format is selected a format should be submitted that includes an introduction, background, data and analysis, synthesis and summary.

Who is eligible to be a faculty thesis mentor?

Any tenure-line or career-line faculty that has an appointment with the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. If a faculty leaves the University the student will work with the Department Honors Adviser in determining a replacement mentor.

Are collaborative theses permitted?

A collaborative thesis is one where an Honors student works with one or more collaborators on the thesis.

Students are eligible to work together on collecting data and assisting each other of processing of the data. The completing of the thesis will be individual and reference of any work done together will need to be referenced in the thesis as a determined by the Honors College.

If students are completing the article-based thesis they will proceed as traditional articles reference collaborators as they are published.

Are joint theses permitted?

A joint thesis is a single thesis that satisfies the requirements of multiple majors.

Yes, the Department will allow this as long as there is a joint plan created between the CVEEN Major adviser and the dual major adviser and is signed off by the Department Honors Adviser. Any changes to the plan will need approval by all Major Advisors.

How does the Honors Thesis relate to other aspects for the major?

As students are working on their thesis they should enroll in CVEEN 4999, Honors Thesis/ Project. This class will replace one of the Additional Technical Elective requirements that students need to complete for the degree.

Additional information for students

Students are encouraged to connect with the Department Honors Adviser during the first semester of their Junior year. This early connection is crucial for pairing with a mentor and developing a thesis project topic. Starting in the Junior year allows for three semesters dedicated to project development, data collection, and writing, ensuring the thesis is completed before graduation.
