Planets, Pedagogy, and Partnerships: Shedding Light on Dark Matter
The Planets, Pedagogy, and Partnerships Praxis Lab provided Honors students with a unique opportunity to explore astronomy, teaching methods, and pedagogy while directly engaging with sixth-grade students. This course equipped university students with the skills necessary to effectively teach core astronomy concepts at the elementary level, integrating scientific knowledge with hands-on mentorship.
During the first phase of the course, students mastered fundamental astronomy concepts, including seasons, moon phases, solar system properties, galaxies, and the universe. They utilized modules from the Clark Planetarium and received instruction in pedagogical strategies, classroom engagement techniques, and methods for delivering interactive lessons. A comprehensive exam ensured that university students had a strong grasp of the subject matter before entering elementary classrooms.
In the second phase, students worked closely with sixth-grade teachers, parents, and community partners at Jackson Elementary and the Salt Lake Center for Science Education. They mentored young students, facilitated discussions, and encouraged parental involvement by integrating cultural perspectives relevant to astronomy.
This reciprocal learning experience not only strengthened science literacy among elementary students but also provided university participants with valuable hands-on teaching experience. Additionally, their feedback contributed to the ongoing development of Clark Planetarium’s educational programs.
By the end of the course, all participants—university students, elementary students, teachers, parents, and Clark Planetarium staff—gained deeper insight into science education and the importance of fostering curiosity in the next generation of learners.
