Community and Change: A UNP Community-Based Think Tank
This Praxis Lab examined what it means to “build community” in an increasingly diverse society. With guidance from faculty working with University Neighborhood Partners (UNP), students engaged in intensive, community-based collaboration with local residents in Salt Lake City’s west side neighborhoods.
Through research and dialogue, students explored the complexities of community-building across differences in language, history, and socioeconomic background. The course addressed key questions about meaningful participation in a shared community and the importance of inclusive engagement.
Community leaders, scholars, students, and local residents investigated topics such as demographic change, cultural norms, family structures, language, and local decision-making. Using ethnographic tools and community-based research methods, participants moved beyond theoretical discussions to develop concrete strategies for fostering connection and involvement in rapidly diversifying neighborhoods.
