The Brain Exercise Initiative

Deadline: Aug 1, 2024

Leadership Opportunity for Pre-med students (Looking for a Chapter President for a Nonprofit)

The Brain Exercise Initiative is a student-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that focuses on improving the memory and cognitive function of those with Alzheimer's using simple math, writing, and reading-aloud exercises. Simple math exercises and reading aloud for just 30 minutes a day can have a positive impact on memory for those with Alzheimer's. This is currently being done extensively in Japan. It was discovered by a Japanese neuroscientist, Ryuta Kawashima, and consists of math exercises and reading aloud of short stories. Done for just 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, improvements in Alzheimer’s patients have been observed. It is currently being done in 1,400 care homes with 15,000 Alzheimer's patients across Japan and has had great success. Many individuals showed improvements in communication and behavior. Some went from being bedridden to sitting in a chair or walking. Some showed improvement in controlling their bowel movements. Additionally, they began to feel happier.

We have active chapters at over 70 universities throughout the US and Canada.  Our volunteers go to retirement homes for about 30-45 minutes a day and do simple math (addition, subtraction etc), reading aloud and writing exercises with the elders. We are currently looking for a very committed and motivated student leader to establish a chapter at your university. You can find out more information about our organization here: www.brainexerciseinitiative.com

As president of your chapter, you will be responsible for reaching out to retirement homes, finding and training volunteers, and implementing the program successfully.  If you wish to take on this leadership role, please apply here.
