The graduate program in Pharmacotherapy Outcomes Research and Health Policy at the University of Utah focuses on:Pharmaceutical Economics and Outcomes ResearchOur program provides aspiring scientists the knowledge and skills to be independent researchers to evaluate the value that medications and other medical technologies bring to the market. The areas of study include health technology assessment, health policy, comparative effectiveness, and patient-centered outcomes research. The program’s extensive collaboration with healthcare decision makers such as managed care and pharmaceutical benefit managers and related professional associations provides the link between evidence generation and meaningful application of research findings to influence health policies. Projects focused on medication use, safety, and comparative-effectiveness research give students the opportunity to gain experience with real-world data and learn state-of-the-art research methods. Numerous career opportunities exist for persons with a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical economics and outcomes research, including positions with the pharmaceutical industry, managed care and pharmacy benefit organizations, academia, government, and consulting.
