The Honors Program strongly supports students' efforts to study abroad. We do this by offering a limited number of scholarships, by identifying academically strong programs which we recommend, and by allowing students to earn credit for Honors classes through study abroad programs. We believe that a liberal education is greatly enriched by a cultural immersion experience.
Programs
The study abroad opportunities we offer in 2008 are outlined in the table below. Please link to the University's Study Abroad office for a full description of each program. The India program is offered in spring of 2008, and the application deadline is October 26, 2007. All other programs are scheduled during the summer and have different application deadlines. The programs are coordinated by the University's Study Abroad Office and have a University of Utah faculty as a guide and mentor.
Application
Please use the application on the Study Abroad website to apply for the Study Abroad program of your choice.
Scholarships
We offer several $1000 scholarships for Honors students participating in Study Abroad programs. All applications from Honors students for one of the Study Abroad programs we sponsor will be considered for a scholarship. You should also check out the scholarship information on the University's Study Abroad website for other kinds of financial support.
Honors students who receive an Honors scholarship for a study abroad program will have their scholarship funds transferred to the University of Utah's Study Abroad office to be applied to the educational and travel expenses of the student.
A decision on scholarships will be made in late March, and scholarship recipients will be notified by email and by letter at that time.
Honors Credit
Students can earn up to six (6) credit hours toward the Honors degree in study abroad classes if they earn a minimum grade of "A-." Before leaving on a study abroad program, students should discuss their course plans with an advisor in the Honors Program. After returning from study abroad, students need to meet with the Director of the Honors Program to determine which courses are eligible for Honors credit. Programs pre-approved for Honors credit are designated on the Study Abroad application. Please note that we do not give Honors credit for foreign language study.
